WHERE ARE THE NUCLEAR REACTORS?

It's not hard to find out. NRC.gov, the web site for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission shows you exactly where they are. If that's not bad enough, the site provides 6 pages which list all the reactors in the USA. They give the Plant Name, the Reactor Type, It's exact geographical location, and The Owner/Operator's name.

The map on the left is the first thing you see when you go to the page of Nuclear Reactors. I note that Florida has 3 plants, all away from where I live. With the right wind conditions, the radiation from the one closest to me would damage Tampa, St. Petersburg, Orlando, and maybe even Datona Beach. Puts a crimp in the old vacation plans when the stream of contaminated particles from the site cuts your state in half.

Actually, there are 5 reactors in Florida, but only located at 3 sites: Crystal River (1), Saint Lucie (2), and Turkey Point (2).

California has cleverly put most of their reactors in the southern part of the state, a long way from their capital.

TWO TYPES OF REACTORS IN THE UNITED STATES

PWR: The Pressurized Water Reactor. (Above) PWR's keep water under pressure so that it heats, but does not boil. Water from the reactor and water for the steam generator never mix. In this way, most of the radioactivity stays in the reactor area.

BWR: The Boiling Water Reactor. (Left) BWR's actually boil the water. In both types, water is converted to steam, and then recycled into water by a part called the condenser, to be used again in the heat process. Since radioactive materials can be dangerous, nuclear power plants have many safety systems to protect workers, the public and the environment. These safety systems include shutting the reactor down quickly and stopping the fission process, systems to cool the reactor down and carry heat away from it, and barriers to contain the radioactivity and prevent it from escaping into the environment.
